Getting Started

What's the difference between the free and paid calculator?

The free Risk Assessment Check gives you a rough estimate based on simple math. The paid Full Calculator uses your exact ZIP code to look up the Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan (SLCSP) and runs the complete IRS iterative calculation to give you precise numbers. The Audit-Ready Report adds the CPA-required iteration-by-iteration audit log.

What is the Audit-Ready Report and why do I need it?

The Audit-Ready Report includes the complete iteration-by-iteration breakdown showing how your SEHID and PTC converged to the final values. This documentation is critical if your return is audited or if your CPA requires proof of compliance with IRS Publication 974. It's the difference between having "an answer" and having "audit-proof documentation.

Why can't I use the Healthcare.gov calculator?

Healthcare.gov only estimates your APTC based on your predicted income. It doesn't calculate the final reconciliation or factor in the Self-Employed Health Insurance Deduction (SEHID), which changes your APTC eligibility. Our tool solves the full interdependent tax problem.

What information do I need to use the calculator?

Please have the following information ready to complete your calculations:

  1. State & Zip Code - Your primary residence for the tax year.
  2. Filing Status - Single, Married, Head of Household, etc.
  3. Ages of Covered Members - The age of every person covered by the policy.
  4. People Covered by Policy - Total number of individuals on the health plan.
  5. Household size - Total number of people on your tax return
  6. Estimated MAGI - Your total Modified Adjusted Gross Income for the year.
  7. Monthly Premium & APTC - From your Form 1095-A.

Is this actual tax advice?

No. This is an estimator tool for planning purposes only. We use IRS-published formulas, but we recommend consulting a tax professional for personalized advice.

ACA Subsidies & Premium Tax Credits

What happens if ACA subsidies expire on December 31, 2025?

If Congress doesn't renew the enhanced subsidies, approximately 9.2 million Americans could see their health insurance premiums increase by up to 114% starting January 2026. This would make coverage unaffordable for many middle-income freelancers and self-employed individuals.

Source: KFF.org - November 2024

Should I still calculate my real cost if subsidies might expire?

Yes, absolutely! Whether subsidies are renewed or not, understanding your REAL cost after SEHID (Self-Employed Health Insurance Deduction) and PTC (Premium Tax Credit) reconciliation is critical for:

  • 2025 tax planning
  • 2026 budget preparation
  • Making informed healthcare decisions
  • Avoiding surprise tax bills from APTC repayment

Our calculator shows you exactly what you'll pay regardless of what happens with subsidies.

Is my income too high to qualify for subsidies?

Under the current enhanced subsidies (through December 31, 2025), there is NO income cap for Premium Tax Credits.

However, if subsidies expire, the cap returns to 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (approximately $60,240 for an individual in 2025).

Use our calculator to see how this affects you under both scenarios.

What is Premium Tax Credit (PTC) reconciliation?

PTC reconciliation happens when you file taxes using Form 8962. Here's how it works:

  • Throughout the year, you receive Advance Premium Tax Credit (APTC) based on your estimated income
  • When you file taxes, the IRS calculates your actual PTC based on your real income
  • If you received more APTC than you qualified for โ†’ You owe money back
  • If you received less APTC than you qualified for โ†’ You get a refund

Our calculator shows you the likely outcome based on your actual numbers.

Using the Calculator

How accurate is the full calculator?

We implement the exact IRS Iterative Calculation Method from Publication 974. Our test cases match IRS examples within $1. However, your actual tax situation may vary based on factors not captured in the calculator.

Our calculator uses official IRS formulas and current federal poverty guidelines to provide estimates within ยฑ2% of actual tax outcomes.

Why don't major programs correctly calculate the SEHID/PTC Iterative Loop?

Major tax programs are built for simple, linear tax flows. They prioritize a simple user experience over complex, mandatory calculations required by the IRS Publication 974. This leads to fundamental failure:

  • This software may fail to converge on the correct number, forcing the user to override figures manually.
  • This manual process increases your audit risk and frequently leads to surprise APTC repayment bills because the numbers are incorrect.

FreelancerHealth is purpose-built to execute the Pub 974 Iterative Loop automatically, ensuring the one true, estimated number without manual overrides

How do I find my SLCSP (Second Lowest Cost Silver Plan)?

Your SLCSP is listed on Form 1095-A that you receive from Healthcare.gov (usually by early February).

Alternatively, you can:

  1. Log into your Healthcare.gov account
  2. View your current plan details
  3. Compare with other Silver plans in your area

Our calculator automatically fetches SLCSP data for your ZIP code and age.

How often should I recalculate my real cost?

You should recalculate whenever:

  • Your income changes significantly (ยฑ $5,000+)
  • Your household size changes
  • You change health insurance plans
  • Legislation affecting subsidies changes
  • At least quarterly if you're a freelancer with variable income

Can I use this for amended returns?

Yesโ€”if you're amending the current tax year that FreelancerHealth supports, you can use our Pub 974โ€“compliant engine and audit log to prepare an accurate amendment.

Which years does FreelancerHealth support?

FreelancerHealth supports the current tax year Premium Tax Credit and Self-Employed Health Insurance Deduction calculations, using official CMS SLCSP data. We add each new tax year's data automatically.

Do you store my personal information?

We only store your email and calculation results after payment. We don't store financial data or personally identifiable information beyond what's needed to send you results. All data transmission uses 256-bit SSL encryption (the same security used by banks).

We never sell your data or share it with third parties except as required by law. See our Privacy Policy for complete details.

Tax Deductions & Benefits

What is the Self-Employed Health Insurance Deduction (SEHID)?

SEHID allows self-employed individuals to deduct health insurance premiums directly from their income on Schedule 1, Line 17 of Form 1040.

Key benefits:

  • Reduces your taxable income
  • Reduces your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI)
  • Can increase your Premium Tax Credit eligibility
  • Can be taken even if you don't itemize deductions

Can I take both SEHID and PTC?

Yes! This is what most freelancers miss. You can:

  1. Deduct premiums using SEHID (reduces taxable income)
  2. Still claim Premium Tax Credit on Form 8962

The SEHID reduces your MAGI, which can actually increase your PTC. This is the "double benefit" that saves freelancers thousands of dollars.

What forms do I need to file?

You'll need:

  • Form 1040 - Your main tax return
  • Schedule 1 - For SEHID (Line 17)
  • Form 8962 - Premium Tax Credit reconciliation
  • Form 1095-A - From Healthcare.gov (reference only)

Our results email includes detailed filing instructions.

Do I need a CPA or can I use TurboTax?

If your situation is straightforward (single, no dependents, one source of income), tax software like TurboTax or FreeTaxUSA can handle SEHID and PTC reconciliation.

Consider a CPA if you have:

  • Multiple income sources
  • Business expenses and deductions
  • Significant income fluctuations
  • Received large APTC amounts that need reconciliation
  • Any questions about your tax situation

Do you offer tax advice?

No, we're a calculation tool only. We can explain how our calculator works, but we cannot provide personalized tax advice. Please consult a licensed CPA or tax professional.
